The Garden Pictorial

The garden in the woods

A plantaholic’s woodland garden

Self-confessed plantaholic Jane Collins started this one and a half acre garden, originally an apple orchard, way back in 1983. Heavily influenced by Vita Sackville-West’s Sissinghurst garden, and also Beth Chatto, Jane loves to experiment with colour combinations, filling the garden with unusual plants.

“I want to try and grow anything new that I haven’t seen or heard of before but am aware that a plant collection is not the same thing as a garden. For that reason, I colour theme the beds to try and create some order and structure."

Wildlife naturally plays a big part in her plans, with owls nesting in the norwegian spruce . . .brambles and hazel are left to encourage the dormice.
