The Garden Pictorial

The Auricula Collection at Pop's Plants

A passion for primula auricula

It was love at first sight for Lesley Roberts and Gil Dawson when they first came across show auriculas with the late Brenda Hyatt's display at Chelsea Flower Show.  Thirty years on and things have got a little out of control.  What started out as 3 plants has become 1300 different cultivars with Plant Heritage National Collection status.  "It was their amazing colour range and delicate appearance, the fact that they are a traditional plant, grown here for at least 400 years", says Lesley.  She sees them as a great plant for most gardens, the border types being grown easily. Even with a tiny garden it is possible to stage them on shelves or on a theatre.  Their nursery is based on the edge of the New Forest, where their mail order service has seen pot grown auriculas being sent around the world, as far as Japan and the Falkland Islands.
