The Garden Pictorial

woodland edge garden, sheffield

A family garden on the forest edge

Set on a suburban street in Sheffield, the conventional approach to the front of this unassuming house does little to prepare you for the family garden that lies behind it. For here the houses have been built on the edge of a densely wooded valley which snakes unseen between the 1950’s housing estates on the western edge of the city.

Through a series of clever steps and terraces, this incredible garden has been simply planted to complement the natural backdrop of trees, increasingly less formal towards the lower section, this narrow plot feels like it ‘borrows’ from the whole woodland, celebrating its leafy position, rather than ignoring it.
